Pending sales of existing homes, or contracts signedf but not closed, rose 6.7 percent in April, accordinb to the ’ Pendintg Home Sales Index. April’s pending sales were up 3.2 percengt from a year earlier. The biggesy increase in April was inthe Northeast, wherse pending sales jumped 32.6 percent from the previousx month. They were up 0.8 percent from a year The index in the Sout hslipped 0.2 percent in April. it is 3.5 percent higher than a year The association cautions that the reporting sample for pendingh home sales is smaller than that of existinyhome sales, so it is subject to greaterr variability. The index measures housing-contract activity.
It is basef on signed real estate contracts forexisting single-family homes, condos and co-ops. A signed contractg is not counted as a sale untilk thetransaction closes.
