The PSC’s decision is a compromise to AT&T’s request that it no longe deliver the phone booksto customers. AT&T Floridza told the PSC that eliminating the automatic distribution of the residentialo white pagesis “an environmentally gree n endeavor and a cost saving measure” and that providinf a paper copy of the directory is “an inefficient use of resourcez in these touch economic times.” But commissioners also were worriesd about how it might impact customers’ abilityt to access information, said PSC Spokeswoman Kirste n Olsen.
Instead of doing away with therule altogether, commissionera agreed to give it a trial run, durinv which time it will gathee customer feedback. “Today’s decision allows the PSC to assess the practicalith of discontinuing printed residentialdirectoryh delivery, while continuing to provider directories to customers who want a PSC Chairman Matthew M. Carterd II said in a news release. As part of the AT&T must put a toll-free number on the coverd of the Yellow Pages that directs people to call if they want aWhite Pages. The directory will still be provided for free to thosre whorequest it.
