Fleming, currently chief commercializationn officer atGeorgia Tech, beat out two candidatexs for the job and replaces the recentlyg retired Wayne Hodges. The avid rocke enthusiast is a fixturein Atlanta’sw tech circles. Fleming, through his mentorship of would-bde entrepreneurs, has managed to earn credibilittywith Atlanta’s venture capital and startup community. The Enterprisd Innovation Institute (EII) operates the (ATDC), a science and technologhy incubator, and Georgia VentureLab, a program that commercializesthe school’ss inventions. Fleming slips into his new shoes amidstbudgef cuts.
The state plans to reduce its fiscal 2010 funding for the Enterprise Innovation Institutweby $1 million or about 10.5 “In these challenging times, I am very pleased that someonde with Stephen's experience, enthusiasm, and drive has electedf to take on this very importany position,” Georgia Tech Vice Provosyt Mark Allen said in an internal e-mail. “The scope, and success of EII is one of the key differentiatorx for Georgia Tech among leadinvg institutions aroundthe world, and is essentiak to GT's core mission of disseminating technological discoveriea and enhancing technology's impact.
” While Fleming’s day job is to transform GT research into companies, he spends his free time dabblinb in space ventures. One of Fleming’s investments is Calif.-based , a developer of rockef enginesand vehicles. Fleming is also an adviser on the boarddof , which develops rockets that would delivere science experiments into space. He is also on the board of trusteez ofTech High, an urban Atlantw high school, focusing on science technology and engineering.
